Nurturers of the Earth in partnership with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) staged Simultaneous Breastfeeding in Multiple Sites on May 2, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. in daycare centers nationwide creating the first Guinness World Record for this category.
The event in itself was a testimony to the resilience of the organizations to reach their goals. A week before the launching of the event, two major partners backed out. Left without organizations that would provide venues and food, the IBCLCs buckled down to work. Dr. Henares-Esguerra approached the DSWD and TESDA 3 weeks before the event. These government agencies who thought it was a good project gave their support, resulting in a much bigger event with up to 22,500 mother-child pairs in 590 sites.
However, Guinness World Record stipulated that each site should involve no less than 25 mothers so the official record went down to 15,128 mother-child pairs in 295 sites. The central site was organized by the City of Paranaque mobilizing more than 1,000 mother-child pairs and many volunteers.Featured in more than one hundred websites around the world, the event inspired several countries like Vietnam and Japan to organize their own simultaneous breastfeeding. The annual event was also institutionalized as a form of national prayer of thanksgiving for motherhood and breastfeeding.
